CVPD Debuts New 911 System
CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - The Chula Vista Police Department is debuting a first-of-its-kind program allowing officers to listen in on 911 calls in real time.
CVPD says the program, which launched Monday, is designed to improve response times and provide officers with more information before they arrive on scene.
"This is a game-changer for us," said CVPD Chief Roxana Kennedy. "It allows our officers to get a real-time understanding of what's happening and to tailor their response accordingly."
Under the new system, 911 calls are routed to a centralized dispatch center, where they are then monitored by CVPD officers. Officers can then listen in on the calls and provide real-time updates to responding units.
CVPD says the system has already proven to be effective. In one recent case, officers were able to use the system to locate a suspect who had fled the scene of a crime.
"This system is a force multiplier for us," said Kennedy. "It allows us to do more with the resources we have and to better serve the community."
The CVPD 911 system is the first of its kind in the United States. CVPD says it is hopeful that other agencies will follow suit.
