Gus Grissom's Near-Perfect Flight and Inadvertent Hatch Blowout
Suborbital Mission with Mercury-Redstone 4
On July 21, 1961, Mercury-Redstone 4 (MR-4) marked the second human spaceflight for the United States. This suborbital mission, known as the "Liberty Bell 7" flight, was launched with astronaut Gus Grissom at the helm.
Hatch Blowout and Near-Drowning
Despite a nearly flawless flight, Grissom experienced a harrowing incident after splashdown. As he attempted to open the escape hatch, it unexpectedly blew off, causing the capsule to rapidly fill with water. Grissom narrowly escaped drowning and was rescued from the capsule by a recovery helicopter.
