Wildfires Prompt Xcel Energy Power Outages

Customers should be ready for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS)

Due to the increased risk of wildfires, public safety power shutoffs (PSPS) may be implemented. These outages are done to help reduce the possibility of wildfires and protect lives and property.

During a PSPS, electricity may be turned off for an extended period of time. Residents should be prepared and have a plan in place to reduce inconvenience and stay safe during an outage.

How to Prepare for a PSPS

Xcel Energy provides the following tips to help you prepare for a PSPS:

  • Make a plan. Determine a way to stay informed about outages, have a communication plan, and plan for how your family will stay safe and comfortable during an outage.
  • Charge all of your devices, including phones, laptops, tablets, and power banks.
  • Identify an alternative source of light, such as flashlights or lanterns.
  • Locate a non-electric source of heat such as a fireplace, wood-burning stove, or portable heater. Keep plenty of fuel and keep in mind that open flames pose fire hazards.
  • Have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to receive updates.
  • Stock up on food, water, and any necessary medications.
  • Keep a first aid kit handy.

What to Do During a PSPS

If a PSPS is in effect, Xcel Energy advises customers to:

  • Stay updated. Monitor local news and official sources for information.
  • Heed all safety instructions. Avoid downed power lines and use generators safely.
  • Conserve resources. Turn off or unplug appliances and electronics not in use.
